Sometimes coming up with a task for Kindergarten is the hardest part!
Story Based Problems
These tasks have a story involved so students can make a connection to the task!
Counting and Number Writing to 20
This a two-for-one counting and number writing to 20 task! In these two tasks, the dogs at the Paw-some Pups Playhouse have knocked over and gotten into the treats, and you students need to count how many treats each dog ate and write the corresponding number. Each dog has their own treat tray (in the form of a 10-frame) the first set of dogs ate 1-10 treats the second set of dogs ate 11-20 treats, and the last set of dogs also ate 11-20 treats but are not as organized as the rest, making it more difficult to count. They can choose to count treats that show 1-10, 11-20, or 11-20 in a random arrangement for their check your understanding task.
In the next Paw-some Pups Playhouse adventure, the number of treats they have eaten is known, but they need to show the quantity that matches the number on the 10 or 20 frame for each dog.
As a bonus, your students can play Spin-A-Treat. There, they spin a number 1-10 or 11-20, create the number on the 10-frame, and write down the number they spun during each turn!
Addition Within 10 or 20 Task
In this task called “Cash Out,” your students work at a grocery store but the cash register is broken! Your students look at each receipt and calculate how much each customer owes. The receipts start with single-digit addition with two addends within 10, then move to a three-digit addition within 20. This task is great for seeing how students approach addition and the strategies they use.
Sorting Task
This task is called Toy Trouble! A group of friends have been playing with toys but know it's clean up time! Each data thin slice has categories of toys and your students will have to figure out how many of each toy there are and decide which toy had the most or least. As they continue, they have more toys to count and/ or more categories of toys. The check your understanding options have 2, 3, and 4 categories for them to sort and count.
Task-Based Problems
These tasks are more simple in their set-up since there is no big back story, but your students will love them just as much!
Composing Shapes
This task is a composing shapes challenge! There are four shape challenges such as, use triangles to make a trapezoid, use different shapes to make a hexagon, and more! The thin-slicing is a new shape challenge for your students to complete. They can choose to do one challenge or try them all!
Longer and Shorter
In this comparing longer and short nonstandard measurement task, your students will be comparing classroom objects to their pencils to decide if they are longer or shorter than their pencils. This task’s recording sheet includes various classroom objects they can compare. This task may be better on a clipboard than a whiteboard so students can rotate through the various items.
